Cheryl de la Rey has been the vice-chancellor of the University of Canterbury since 2019 and is a professor of psychology. She previously held leadership positions in tertiary education in South Africa including deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Cape Town and vice-chancellor and principal of the University of Pretoria. Her PhD is in Social Psychology with a specific focus on gender and intergroup relations. After many years as an academic she moved into university management. Cheryl has also worked on higher education policy and is the current chairperson of the Association of Commonwealth Universities and Universities New Zealand.
